Introduction to American Government

New Edition Summary

In preparing the fourth edition of Introduction to American Government, I have made every effort to include the most up-to-date information available in every chapter. My goal has been to focus on the contemporary political landscape in a manner you and your students will find both relevant and engaging. In particular:

1. I have made updates throughout the text-and especially in chapters 8 and 9-to reflect the results of the November 2006 election and the changes it brought to the partisan balance of power in Washington, DC.

2. I have updated chapter 12 to reflect the transition from the Rehnquist Court to the Roberts Court. I have also updated chapter 3 to reflect recent Court decisions in the area of civil liberties and civil rights.

3. I have included special features to help students think critically about government responses to Hurricane Katrina, ethics violations in the U.S. Congress, and the role of moderates and ideologues in American politics.

You will also find updated data on public opinion, the budget, and the ongoing war on terror throughout the text. I hope this fourth edition serves you and your students well!

Best Regards,

Charles C. Turner
